The New7Wonders Foundation has launched yet another voting campaign: New7Wonders Cities. Peru has done well in the two previous campaigns, with Machu Picchu finishing as one of the New7Wonders of the World and the Amazon voted as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
The nomination phase for the cities campaign began on January 7, 2012, with more than 1,200 cities from 220 different countries selected for the opening round. Voters have until March 7 to choose seven cities from the initial list, with more than 300 cities set to qualify for the next round.
Six Peruvian cities have made it to the first round:
- Arequipa
- Callao
- Cusco
- Iquitos
- Lima
- Trujillo
This could be a tough nut to crack for Peru. Realistically, Cusco has the greatest chance of making it to the final seven -- but there's an awful lot of competition out there. The campaign will end on December 7, 2013, so there's still a long, long way to go until the final seven winners are revealed...
