Due to the upcoming Dakar Rally in Peru, many 4- and 5-star hotels in Lima have already reached capacity.
According to Carlos Canales, president of the Cámara Nacional de Turismo (Canatur), there are about 5,000 4- and 5-star hotel rooms in Lima, while the Dakar support teams and participants alone account for more than 5,000 people (see Gestión website for full report in Spanish).
Due to the lack of top-end rooms, spectators and Dakar team members have begun looking for 3-star hotels in districts such as Miraflores, San Isidro, Surco and the historic center.
The Dakar Rally begins in Lima on January 5. If you're heading to Lima any time from now until at least the start of the event, prepare yourself for some hotel hunting. If you want 5-star luxury and don't already have a reservation, you might have to lower your standards or change the date of your trip.
